2004 gmc yukon xl review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Pull trailers, move crowds, haul gear. introductionthe yukon xl is gmc's version of the chevy suburban. It's a well-equipped vehicle and a good choice for families of six or more. It's a good choice for families who find themselves needing three rows of seats on a daily basis. Even when fully loaded with people, there's space left over for large amounts of gear. where the yukon xl really comes into its own, however, is when heavy-duty towing is needed. A standard yukon xl 2wd 1500 model is rated to tow trailers of up to 8,400 pounds. A yukon xl 2500, the heavy-duty model, is rated to pull a 12,000-pound trailer. This makes the yukon xl an excellent choice for families with boats or horses. though identical in many respects, there are differences between the suburban and the yukon xl. Styling cues distinguish the gmc from the chevrolet. revisions for 2003 brought improved brakes, smarter airbags, a modernized electrical system, and improved interior features. For 2004, the yukon xl is better and safer still. It comes with a tire-pressure monitor and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front-seat passenger. The heavy-duty 2500 2wd 39,460) and 2500 4wd 42,160) are rated to pull trailers up to 12,000 pounds. A 6. 0-liter v8 comes standard on denali and 2500 models. An 8. 1-liter v8 850) is optional for 2500 models, and delivers 440 pounds-feet of torque for maximum towing capability. The top of the line is the yukon xl denali, which is a 1500. the base sle model is a well-equipped vehicle. Three rows of seats are standard. Denali is distinguished by unique exterior design cues. walkaroundthe gmc yukon xl is a long-wheelbase version of the yukon, just as the suburban is a long-wheelbase version of the chevy tahoe. Xl means extra long: yukon xl is based on the same platform as the yukon, but it's stretched 14 inches in wheelbase and about 20 inches overall. While the yukon can carry a lot of people or a lot of cargo, the yukon xl can do both at the same time. Gmc takes a more sophisticated, more understated approach to design than chevrolet. Still, the yukon xl shares the unmistakable profile of the 'burb. denali trades the standard yukon xl's black grille for a bright mask of fine-metal mesh, but then swaps the base model's chrome bumpers for body-color bumpers, keeping the overall flash level about equal. Round fog lights are neatly tunneled into the lower part of denali's unique front bumper. The liftgate comes standard and features a glass section that opens independently. Cargo doors work better for work vehicles as they open wide and allow a closer working position to the vehicle's storage area. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. The hinges can be released, allowing the doors to open fully when loading large items. Most people find the liftgate preferable, however. They are the leaders when it comes to seating and cargo capacity (discounting the ford excursion, which is being discontinued). Big inside, the yukon xl is very roomy and, for the most part, comfortable. the exception is the seats. Gm's bucket seats are big and cushy, but i don't always find them comfortable. The seat bottoms lack support, especially on the sides, and the seat bottoms don't seem long enough. Owners often disagree with this assessment, however. Bucket seats are standard on slt and denali models an optional on the sle. The standard front seat setup in yukon xl is a three-passenger, manually reclining 40/20/40 split bench with dual manual lumbar support and six-way power for the driver. They are similar in terms of comfort. Yukon xl comes standard with nice custom cloth upholstery. The optional ultrasoft leather makes this big truck look and feel like a luxury vehicle. the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the console lid features a nice rubber-lined indention, handy for sunglasses and other items. It would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. ergonomics are otherwise excellent. The cup holders are superb, a good feature for people who live and work in their vehicles. Above are well-designed map lights that can be aimed. A covered power outlet is conveniently located for cell phones and radar detectors, in addition to the cigar lighter inside the ashtray compartment. the driver information center was redesigned last year, and is now located immediately in front of the driver, below the speedometer. It's handy and easy to use, allowing the driver to program automatic locking and other features, as well as providing trip mileage, fuel economy and other data. Turn those features off, turn them on, or deploy them partially. Everything is programmable. audio and climate control systems are well designed and easy to operate. The heating and air conditioning systems were redesigned for 2003 to deliver faster warm-ups and cool-downs than before. The manual heating controls that come on the base model (sle) are nicely designed and work well. Much better, however, are the digital three-zone climate controls that come on the other models. They are sophisticated yet easy to operate, and permit separate adjustments for driver and passenger. The rear heating/air conditioning controls are mounted overhead and help improve comfort for pets as well as people. a new tire-pressure monitoring system added for 2004 continuously checks inflation pressures and flashes a warning on the instrument cluster should any tire lose air pressure. The acadia denali features a more luxurious interior and signature denali design cues. The 2011 acadia denali uses the same 3. 6-liter v6 as the other models and is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. the gmc acadia can seat seven or eight and haul a mountain of cargo. Inside and out, the acadia is similar in size to the gmc yukon and chevy tahoe. A crossover, it's constructed more like a car than a truck, so it's lighter and has a more rigid chassis than a truck does. acadia delivers what most people want from a full-size suv. The driver sits high off the ground and has a commanding view of the road. The acadia can carry a lot of cargo. We found it seats six adults comfortably. Rear-seat dvd entertainment is available. the only places where the acadia falls short of truck-based suvs are in heavy-duty towing or slogging through muck or over rugged terrain. Properly equipped, the gmc acadia can tow 5,200 pounds, while a yukon is rated to pull 7,500 pounds or more. The yukon is based on the sierra full-size pickup, so it can regularly handle terrain unsuitable for the acadia. That's plenty for most people. on the road, the acadia handles better and is smoother than a yukon and other truck-based suvs. It smoothes bumpy pavement and takes corners in a reassuring manner for a large vehicle. the 288-horsepower 3. 6-liter v6 is responsive and efficient and supplies good acceleration. Optional all-wheel drive enhances safety on slippery surfaces. 2011 acadia models come with onstar 9. 0, which uses a global positioning system and an extra-powerful cellular telephone to put the driver in touch with the onstar center, which can tell where the vehicle is located and send help or provide other assistance. Should the airbags deploy, the system will automatically notify the onstar center that an accident has occurred and where the vehicle is located so it can then send help. Onstar service is free for the first year but after that requires a subscription fee. walkaroundthe gmc acadia shares its size and overall features with the buick enclave and chevy traverse. Measuring 201 inches, an acadia is a lot longer than a ford explorer. But it doesn't look it. it's a big vehicle that doesn't look bulky, and carries a kind of active grace. The rounded front end features a bright grille surrounding a prominent gmc emblem. Distinctively curved headlight clusters give the acadia a slightly startled expression. Projector beams are standard, while high-intensity discharge headlights are optional. Small round fog lights nestle below. The front bumper is massive, but the size is lost by its black color and bright strip at the top. from the side, the rounded fender flares are prominent, and a horizontal character line sets out to connect them but disappears into the doors instead. Tasteful bright trim and polished aluminum roof rails add visual interest. The shape of the acadia is aerodynamically efficient for an suv, with a drag coefficient of 0. 344. The heating and cooling controls are easy to find and use. The instruments are legible, not lost in some fussy attempt at a complex design. Big cupholders and a deep bin between the front seats are welcome, but the pockets on the inside door panels are too narrow for any meaningful storage. the front seats are wide and comfortable. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, making it easy for drivers tall and short to get comfortable. As with any suv, the driver sits high, with a good view down the road. but visibility to the rear isn't great, requiring care when backing up. We recommend opting for ultrasonic rear park assist, which can detect objects out of the driver's line of sight. We further recommend getting the rearview camera, which projects its image on the navigation screen or the rearview mirror. However, in a messy chicago winter, the camera lens became speckled with dirt and salt, making the small image on the rearview mirror hard to see. A larger image on a navigation screen would have been easier to see and more helpful. An effective rearview camera is a valuable piece of safety equipment because it can help the driver spot a child behind the vehicle before backing up. Crew cab models offer a rear-seat dvd entertainment center as an option, making these pickups an attractive alternative to a full-size suv. gmc sierra’s current design dates from 1999, but it was significantly refined and updated last year, with a bolder, more raked front end. Its interior was revised as well, for improved function and appearance. The brakes were upgraded, and the engines tuned to run cleaner. these are great tow vehicles. The 2500/3500 hd models come with a 300-horsepower, 6. 0-liter v8. Carpeting and cloth seats are also standard. The w/t (work truck) package is now available on all sierra models. The w/t deletes the front-end chrome and carpeting, and substitutes vinyl seats, for a credit of $200-$700, depending on cab style. sle trim adds a cd player, fog lamps, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Leather upholstery is optional. Slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds automatic air conditioning, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and onstar telecommunications. sierra denali, the flagship of the fleet, is an extended-cab, short-bed 4x4. Denali packs a 325-horsepower version of the 6. 0-liter v8, along with automatic transmission and an exclusive, sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali comes with onstar, tone-on-tone leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, a unique console and other exclusive amenities. The interior was extensively redesigned for 2003. the seats are big and cushy. Other pickup owners find the gm seats more to their liking. It includes a storage compartment and a 12-volt power outlet at the rear. (all sierras come with three 12-volt power outlets at the bottom center of the dash.) vents and hvac controls for rear-seat passengers are mounted on the rear of the center console on crew cabs and extended cabs. extended-cab models offer surprisingly good back seat accommodations. Climb through the reverse-opening rear door and find a seat that’s reasonably comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders.
